10 Winterizing Tips For Vehicle Storage

If you live in a cold climate, here are ten tips for protecting your vehicle during winter storage.

  1. Remove any liquids from the trunk and passenger compartment that could freeze and burst.

  2. Wash and detail the vehicle with a coat of wax and leather or vinyl conditioner.

  3. Park the vehicle on a tarp, blanket or carpet to prevent moisture from forming inside the vehicle.

  4. Top off the tires with air, then place a foam cushion beneath the tires to preserve their round shape.

  5. Fill gas tank, then add and circulate a fuel stabilizer throughout the engine to prevent condensation.

  6. Change the oil to prevent corrosive byproducts of the combustion process from sitting in the engine.

  7. Prevent radiator cracks by testing the anti-freeze to ensure it is adequate for your climate.

  8. Install a battery tender to maintain a charge.

  9. Wrap the air cleaner and tail pipes with aluminum foil to prevent rodents from nesting inside.

  10. Use a breathable cover, blanket or sheet to help protect the vehicle's paint.
